AIKIDO FOR BEGINNERS
Aikido is a non-aggressive martial art system derived from Japan. The primary principle of Aikido is to defend yourself in an attack through redirecting the strength of your opponent. In this course you will learn the fundamental principles of Aikido. This includes but is not limited to learning how to roll safely, executing basic techniques including pins and throws, and strikes and takings or grabs, and foot work. This is a martial art course NOT a self-defense course.
Bring:
Loose clothing such as track pants and t-shirt. Please remove jewelry before training. A drink bottle may also be a good idea.

JAPANESE SWORD FIGHTING - BEGINNERS
During this course you will be introduced to the Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu style of Japanese Sword Fighting, a traditional style of Kenjutsu and Iaijutsu. The modern martial art of Kendo is based on this and similar traditional styles. Practice involves using wooden swords and, at an advanced level, live blades. In this course students will be taught correct cutting technique, core principles and the first few kata.

JUJUSTU
The object of Seishinkan jujutsu is to preserve the mindset of the samurai while updating the techniques for contemporary society. Seishinkan jujutsu is originally based on Daito Ryu Jujutsu, and also has strong influences from Hapkido. This course will provide a brief introduction to the Seishinkan style of Jujutsu for self-defence.

KICKBOXING
This class is designed for beginners. Come along twice a week and increase your fitness while learning kickboxing techniques. This course, based on Muay Thai techniques, isn’t just an aerobic work out—you’ll also get to kick and box using protective pads (NOTE: this is not Tae Bo). Tired of the same old sports? Want to try something new? Parkour for beginners is designed to give participants the ability to do the basic vaults, rolls and movements involved in the sport of Parkour. The class will focus on balance, strength, fluid movement exercises and basic technique. We will also cater for more advanced techniques for those that they are capable. Come try something different! During this course you will recreate your approach to exercise and re-teach your body correct form and movement. RENAISSANCE RAPIER SWORD FIGHTING
This course provides an introduction to the noble art of rapier fencing as practised in late Renaissance Europe. We teach techniques based on seventeenth-century sources. In this course you will learn: footwork; guard positions; defensive voids; thrusting, parrying and riposting with the rapier; and use of offhand devices such as dagger, baton and cloak. Renaissance rapier is a fast-moving and fascinating sport. It is suitable for men and women alike.
Bring:
Clothes you can move comfortably in; for the later sessions, there is an option of practising real-time combat. For real-time combat men will need to wear rigid groin protection (e.g. cricket box). The tutor will discuss these requirements before the final session.

This course is for beginners. This course is comprised of four one-hour sessions and is for absolute beginners interested in learning to play squash. The instructor is an experienced squash player. For the duration of your squash course you have the opportunity of practising on the casual booking court for free (see information opposite).

WALKING BEYOND CAMPUS
Are you new to Dunedin, or simply need to expand your horizons beyond North Dunedin? Come along and join us to explore some of Dunedin’s most beautiful walks including Tunnel Beach, Aramoana, the Pinnacle Track and Taieri Mouth. Learn about the local history of each track, vegetation, wildlife and so much more all whilst meeting new people, getting some fresh air and getting in a good workout. Transport and some snacks are provided.
Bring:
Comfortable walking clothing and strong walking shoes. You may also want to bring a camera to take some snazzy shots of the trip. In addition to the above you must bring a day pack containing the following (minimum requirements):
Personal basic first aid kit
Water proof jacket
Drink bottle
Spare set of clothing; 1 polypro top, 1 pair of polypro pants, a lightweight wool or fleece top, a beanie and gloves and one pair of socks (synthetic only; no cotton).
