This course is for beginners. This course provides an introduction to the ancient art of swordsmanship and modern Olympic sport of Fencing. It is suitable for all levels of fitness and will cover basic footwork and attack and defence with the foil. Enrol now and give fencing a go!

During this course you will be introduced to the Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu style of Japanese Sword Fighting, a traditional style of Kenjutsu and Iaijutsu. The object of Seishinkan jujutsu is to preserve the mindset of the samurai while updating the techniques for contemporary society. Seishinkan jujutsu is originally based on Daito Ryu Jujutsu, and also has strong influences from Hapkido. This course will provide a brief introduction to the Seishinkan style of Jujutsu for self-defence.

This course aims to introduce students to the practice of meditation. Meditation (dhyana, ch'an, zen) is a fundamental praxis common to all paths of Yoga and Buddhism. These classes cover techniques for sitting, breathing, centering, cultivating mental awareness and observing the mind in stillness.

Thai Kickboxing; the art of eight limbs; a traditional and ancient martial art considered one of the best form of standing up fighting, with its roots deeply embedded in Buddhism. This 10-week technique course introduces and covers basic concepts and movements of Muay Thai using partnered pad work, bag work, shadow drills, and conditioning. You will cover the basics from your stance and guard all the way to practicing clinch grappling. This course will teach participants the correct technique for a wide range of punches, kicks, and knees as well as important self-defence in a relaxed, focused and safe environment. Participants may have opportunities to participate in grading conducted by the OUSA Dunedin Thai Kickboxing club should they wish to progress further upon completion of the course.

This course is essentially a beginners course with some intermediate exercises included to provide a gradual progression of difficulty. Sign up for the whole ten weeks, and progress throughout the semester. Pilates is an exercise programme based on the work of Joseph Pilates. During this course you will recreate your approach to exercise and re-teach your body correct form and movement. This course is designed for beginners or those wanting a recap. The particular style of self defence taught will be that of Krav Maga. Krav Maga is a martial art and self-defence system developed for the military in Israel. It is known for its focus on real-world situations and extremely efficient and brutal counter-attacks. Krav Maga has a philosophy emphasizing threat neutralization, simultaneous defensive and offensive manoeuvres, and aggression. Krav Maga is used by Israeli Defence Forces, both regular and special forces, and several closely related variations have been developed and adopted by law enforcement and intelligence organizations. Do you want to learn how to play squash? Then this course is perfect for you. This course will teach you the basic rules of the sport and how to hold and manipulate your racquet. You will also learn the fundamental shots of the game and have plenty of game time to put everything you’ve learnt into practice. In addition to the above you’ll also get free use of the casual squash court for the duration of the course. We also strongly encourage participants to also attend the Squash Club’s free club night on Friday evenings (your instructor will tell you more about this in class). This course is most suited for those who have not participated in racquet or ball sports prior. However, if you have experience with racquet/ball sports our squash for beginners’ course will be suitable.
This course has the same content as our absolute beginner’s course however it will progress more quickly. There is an expectation you’ll have some basic hand-eye coordination i.e. have participated in other racquet or ball sports. In addition to the above you’ll also get free use of the casual squash court for the duration of the course. We also strongly encourage participants to also attend the Squash Club’s free club night on Friday evenings (your instructor will tell you more about this in class). Post course, should you wish to carry on socially or competitively the Squash Club have a range of memberships. The squash club is super friendly and inviting and best of all membership is very affordable.

Free Women's Self-Defence Workshop, taught by Bell Murphy, an accredited member of the Women's Self Defence Network –Wāhine Toa. Based on research about what works, this workshop provides a fun, supportive space for learning about your rights and practicing simple techniques—mental, verbal and physical—which anyone can use for staying safe and empowered no matter how little they are or how big and strong an attacker might be. By sharing ideas and suggestions (rather than giving a list of do’s and don’ts) this course will increase your options and confidence for how to resist abuse in a range of situations particularly relevant to young women's lives (strangers in public, people we know and in our relationships). It will also give you some more ideas about where to find support and how to support others. No experience needed. All women, including transgender/takatāpui, of all ages and abilities warmly welcome.

These very popular, mixed level classes offer classical hatha-yoga in the tradition of the internationally renowned Iyengar school. These yoga classes are suitable for everyone from absolute beginners to intermediate and more advanced participants. Yoga taught in these classes includes physical postures (asana), breathing exercises and relaxation which promotes vitality, stress relief, flexibility, increased strength and stamina, mental clarity and focus. The course tutor is trained in the Iyengar school of classical hatha-yoga and has a wealth of experience and knowledge concerning yogic practice, anatomy, Sanskrit and beyond.
