MINUTES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 13 MAY 2019 AT 9.06AM HELD IN THE CLUBS AND SOCIETIES CENTRE, ALBANY STREET, DUNEDIN

MATTERS ARISING

Tertiary Open Day – went well and thanks to those who helped.  The food ran out quickly as very popular with both students and their families.

INWARD CORRESPONDENCE

            Life member Michael Tull – a letter of appreciation was received and noted

            ANZAC Event accolade – a letter was received congratulating OUSA on a fine event.

KNOW YOUR STUFF DONATION PROPOSAL

Debbie wished to bring this to the Executive to consider if a donation of $1,000 could be donated to Know Your Stuff NZ to assist them for the fine work they do drug testing at OUSA events.  She suggested it come from the Events budget line.

Know Your Stuff NZ is a community organisation of volunteers operating in collaboration with the New Zealand Drug Foundation to provide drug related harm reduction services at events around New Zealand, including drug checking, free of charge.

CAREERS DEVELOPMENT

James noted the recent Critic article discussing this caused debate and now the issue has come to a close.

            Well done William Dreyer for your hard work and the time you spent on this.

            William and James will attend the hearing to speak to this submission.

POLICY COMMITTEE MINUTES

            As attached.  It was noted there is a full review of the constitution coming up soon.

            This should be noted as a re-affiliation as they have been affiliated prior.

179/18 THAT the Feminist Club be re-affiliated to OUSA.

PROVISION OF SERVICE AGREEMENT – OUSA/OPSA

As attached.  This is a provision of service agreement between OPSA and OUSA for both sets of students to see their sport and cultural and educational needs are met, permitting OPSA students to enjoy the full clubs, sports and societies facilities of OUSA.  It is also valuable for LGBT students to utilise OUSA’s services too.

180/19 THAT the OUSA Executive agrees to the provision of services for OPSA to use the OUSA Recreation services, as it benefits both parties.

SCHOOL STRIKE FOR STUDENTS

There is another schools march planned for the 24 May.  An organiser met with Bonnie and Georgia about getting tertiary students involved more this time.

Would OUSA encourage tertiary students to take time out of their lectures to walk on this March?  Staff would also be invited.

Would OUSA be part of the static gathering in the Octagon from 1-3pm on 24 May?

James was concerned OUSA wasn’t given enough notice.  Also there are graduation ceremonies that day he is attending so needs to apologise now.

182/19 THAT Tyler West be granted speaking rights for the duration of this meeting.

Tyler confirmed there was a protest organised for 24 May 2019, 1-3pm and ending in the Octagon. 

Some weren’t keen to actively encourage Tertiary students to miss lectures but happy to support this strike.

185/19 THAT OUSA supports students’ rights to self-identification including gender diverse and non-binary identification.

GENERAL BUSINESS

Rally against Racism – Museum Reserve at 1pm Saturday.  Can OUSA support this?  The Dunedin Multi-Ethnic Committee, Otago Muslim Association, Otago Muslim Students’ Association and other group will be taking part.  A coalition group in Christchurch has made contact for this Rally to happen.

A request if OUSA could help with marketing and borrow a marquee.

186/19 THAT the OUSA Executive supports the Rally against Racism being held on 18 May 2019.

            Graduation – congratulations to Jack Manning, Colleges Officer who graduated on Saturday.

            Colleges Committee meeting – any times please get them to Jack for the first meeting coming up.  An Asian dress-up party was held at the ReFuel bar last year which was in very poor taste.  It was suggested this unaccepted behaviour be brought to the Colleges committee to discourage such behaviour.

            Pacific Island Students’ are organising a mental health campaign this week – Next Generation. - Next Tale!
